Position Summary:

Deep Roots Charter School is seeking an energetic and loving Director of Special Education to lead our first Deep Roots Charter School in Philadelphia. The Director of Special Education is directly responsible for improving the academic and behavioral performance of our scholars with disabilities and manages and coordinates all specialized services including special education, intervention programming, counseling, and all other related services. The all-encompassing goal is to empower our students with disabilities to achieve academically and to ensure that the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs of all students with IEPs are met with full fidelity in the learning environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the special education program for a school of approximately 300 students.
  • Implement, supervise and facilitate Deep Roots intervention programs and curricula, including curricular and program adjustments as needed.
  • Supervise and coordinate the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and 504 processes.
  • Supervise and coordinate evaluations and related services for students.
  • Coordinate and monitor the Mental Health services of partner organizations.
  • Chair and conduct manifestation determination meetings and other special education meetings.
  • Ensure the implementation of accommodations in the general education environment.
  • Ensure that student files are in full compliance with all state and federal special education regulations
  • Under the guidance of the Principal, provide world class instructional coaching, supervision and evaluation for special education staff, including regularly visiting classrooms.
  • Provide leadership on the school’s Administrative Leadership Team.
  • Support school leader and other directors in leading the school and creating a school-wide philosophy of Practice, Service and Purpose.

Qualifications:

  • Track record of exemplary instructional and classroom management skills.
  • Strong leadership skills and a demonstrated capacity to coach and supervise school based staff.
  • Ability to train and supervise employees.
  • Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs designed for students with learning, physical and behavioral disabilities.
  • Knowledge of medical and psychosocial issues related to individuals with learning, developmental, and/or emotional disabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills with diverse constituents (teachers, parents, children, board members).
  • A belief that all disciplined learners should be held to high academic standards.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and responsibility, and a strong work ethic for student achievement.
  • Proven ability to proactively lead by example, effectively manage adults, and seek out feedback..
  • Knowledge of urban education and charter schools.
  • A belief in the core values of Practice, Service and Purpose.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Special Education with at least five (5) years of urban education experience.
  • Must be PA state certified in special education and administration.

Physical Requirements: Ability to physically perform the duties and to work.
